Why Does Hair Colour Fade So Fast?

Hair dye works by opening the cuticle and depositing color molecules into the cortex. Over time, these molecules wash out, especially when the cuticle is lifted or damaged. Understanding why helps you prevent it.

  • Sulfates: Harsh detergents strip color molecules along with natural oils
  • Hot water: Opens the cuticle, allowing color to escape
  • UV exposure: Breaks down color molecules (especially reds and vivids)
  • Heat styling: Opens cuticles and accelerates fading
  • Chlorine & minerals: Build up on hair and alter color

The first 72 hours after coloring are critical. The cuticle is still open and color is settling, treat your hair gently during this window.

  4. UV protection: Use a UV-filter spray or leave-in with SPF

Questions

Frequently asked

01 How soon can you wash hair after colouring?

Wait 72 hours. The cuticle stays partly open while the colour settles, and washing inside that window costs more pigment than any single week that follows.

02 Do sulfate-free shampoos really preserve colour?

Yes, measurably. Sulfate surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate strip pigment along with sebum. Milder systems built on cocamidopropyl betaine remove noticeably less, though the label alone means nothing, check the first five INCI entries.

03 Why does red hair colour fade fastest?

Red pigment molecules are the smallest of the permanent dyes, so they escape the cortex through a lifted cuticle faster than brown or black. Red also oxidises quickest under UV.
