Your scalp is skin, and it deserves the same attention as your face. Here’s how to care for it properly.

Why Does Scalp Health Affect Your Hair?

Healthy hair starts at the root, literally. Your scalp is the soil from which your hair grows. An unhealthy scalp leads to thinning, dullness, excess shedding, and slow growth. Scalp issues are also the #1 cause of visible hair problems like dandruff, itchiness, and oiliness.

Your scalp has more sebaceous glands per square inch than anywhere else on your body. It needs specialized care, not the same products you use on your face or body.

What Are the Most Common Scalp Conditions?

Dandruff (Seborrheic Dermatitis)

Caused by an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, dandruff appears as white flakes accompanied by itching. It’s not caused by dryness, it’s actually an inflammatory response. Look for shampoos with zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, or salicylic acid.

Oily Scalp

Excess sebum production can be hormonal, genetic, or triggered by over-washing. The scalp produces more oil to compensate for what’s stripped away, creating a vicious cycle.

Dry/Flaky Scalp

Unlike dandruff, dry scalp produces small, white flakes without inflammation. It’s often seasonal (worse in winter) and responds well to moisturizing scalp treatments.

Sensitivity/Redness

Sensitive scalps react to products, stress, or environmental factors with redness, burning, or tenderness. Look for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products.

Questions

Frequently asked

01 Is dandruff caused by a dry scalp?

Usually not. Most dandruff is an inflammatory response to Malassezia yeast metabolising sebum, which is why it often appears on oily scalps and why moisturising can make it worse. Antifungal shampoos address the cause.

02 How often should you exfoliate your scalp?

Once a week with a chemical exfoliant such as salicylic or glycolic acid. Physical scrubs used at every wash irritate the barrier and can trigger the rebound oil production they were meant to fix.

03 Can scalp care regrow hair?

It cannot create new follicles, but resolving chronic inflammation stops you losing ground on existing ones. Inflammation shortens the growing phase, so treating it protects density rather than restoring it.
