Why your hair is still dry, and what actually works to fix it.
Is Your Hair Dry or Dehydrated?
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different conditions:
- Dry hair lacks natural oils (sebum). It feels rough, looks dull, and is common with aging, over-washing, or harsh products.
- Dehydrated hair lacks water/moisture. It feels straw-like, is prone to static, and often occurs after chemical processing or heat damage.
You can have both, and the treatment approach differs. Hydration (water-based products) and moisture (oil/butter-based products) work together but aren’t interchangeable.
Think of hydration as the glass of water your hair drinks, and moisture as the lotion that seals it in. You need both.

What Is the L.O.C. Method and Does It Work?
This layering technique seals in moisture more effectively than any single product:
- L, Liquid: Start with water or a water-based leave-in conditioner on soaking wet hair
- O, Oil: Apply a lightweight oil (jojoba, argan, or sweet almond) to lock in the liquid
- C, Cream: Seal everything with a rich cream or butter (shea butter, curl cream)
Which Ingredients Actually Hydrate Hair?
- Glycerin, Humectant that draws moisture from the air into hair
- Hyaluronic acid, Holds up to 1000x its weight in water
- Aloe vera, Natural moisturizer with vitamins and enzymes
- Argan oil, Lightweight oil rich in vitamin E and fatty acids
- Shea butter, Seals in moisture with a protective barrier
What Daily Habits Keep Hair Hydrated?
- **** Wash with lukewarm (not hot) water, hot water strips natural oils
- **** Use a sulfate-free shampoo or co-wash
- **** Apply leave-in conditioner to damp hair every wash day
- **** Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction
- **** Deep condition once a week with a hydrating mask
- **** Use a humidifier in dry climates or during winter

Questions
Frequently asked
01 Why is my hair still dry after using conditioner?
Conditioner seals moisture in but does not put water there. If the fibre was never hydrated, sealing it locks the dryness in. Apply a water-based leave-in to damp hair first, then the conditioning layer within a few minutes.
02 How often should you use a hair mask?
Once a week for most hair, twice for coily or bleached hair. More frequent use rarely improves results and tends to leave build-up that blocks the next application.
03 Do oils moisturise hair?
Oils seal rather than moisturise. They slow water loss from the fibre but add no water themselves, which is why an oil applied to dry hair makes it shinier without making it softer over time.
